NEO2: A Revolutionary Mobile Oxygen Concentrator

Redesigning Oxygen Therapy for a Better Lifestyle

People suffering from chronic lung diseases often struggle to maintain an active and independent lifestyle due to the limitations imposed by traditional liquid oxygen tanks. Recognizing this challenge, the design team of Regnath, Gerullis & Shao created NEO2, a groundbreaking mobile oxygen concentrator that aims to provide a seamless user experience and enhance the quality of life for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions.

NEO2 is a compact and lightweight device designed specifically for individuals with chronic lung diseases such as COPD. Unlike traditional oxygen tanks, NEO2 is powered by attachable batteries that can be conveniently charged inductively on the charging station. This innovative feature ensures that users can easily carry their oxygen concentrator wherever they go, without the need for heavy and cumbersome tanks.

The device is accompanied by a matching bag that not only serves as a stylish accessory but also provides storage space for additional batteries. To prevent the tubing from getting tangled, users can secure it in place on the bag's shoulder strap, ensuring hassle-free mobility.

Controlling the oxygen flow is effortless with NEO2's remote control, which can be conveniently clipped to the bag's shoulder strap. The remote control not only allows users to adjust the oxygen flow level but also provides real-time battery status updates. Additionally, the device itself displays the oxygen flow level, ensuring that users have all the necessary information at their fingertips.

Keeping track of oxygen needs and activities is made simple with the NEO2 mobile app. This user-friendly app provides users with valuable insights into their oxygen usage and allows them to monitor their activities. By seamlessly integrating into the user's daily life, NEO2 aims to reduce stigmatization and empower individuals with chronic respiratory conditions to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

During the design process, the team faced several challenges in balancing user preferences, usability, and technical constraints. However, their dedication and innovative approach resulted in a device that not only meets the needs of patients but also adheres to manufacturing standards.

NEO2 was developed as a prototype using 3D printing technology. However, the design is adaptable to traditional manufacturing methods, making it feasible for mass production.

Recognizing its exceptional design and contribution to improving the quality of life for individuals with chronic lung diseases, NEO2 was awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment category in 2017. This accolade acknowledges the team's creative ingenuity and their commitment to incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.

NEO2 is not just a medical device; it is a symbol of hope and empowerment for individuals battling chronic respiratory conditions. With its innovative features and user-centric design, NEO2 revolutionizes oxygen therapy, enabling individuals to embrace an active and independent lifestyle.
